About Us

How did Ivy and Sterling get its name?

Our family legend describes two very separate lives colliding in the search for freedom and prosperity. In the desolate fields of 1850s Ireland, Ivy Caneer's world was withering. The potato blight had nearly destroyed her family's livelihood and, more painfully, her hope. Across the Irish Sea, in a wealthy, rigid English manor, Sterling Gardner was suffocating under the expectations of his family.

Their paths crossed in Liverpool, both waiting for passage to America. Ivy was fleeing starvation with her meager savings; Sterling was fleeing a loveless future. Amidst the chaos of the docks, they found friendship that defied prejudice and social standing.

The journey was harrowing, yet in the crowded, dark steerage, they found solace in each other. Sterling shared his simple rations; Ivy offered her sweet, lilting voice in song. By the time they arrived in Savannah, they were inseparable.

In this new world, the old rules didn't apply, and hope and optimism abounded.

They married in a small chapel, and their love, faith in God, and hard work were the foundation of their new life. It was a love that had crossed an ocean, survived a famine, and defied the disapproval of those they left behind. In the heart of Georgia, they built a family and a future, and a long, resilient lineage.
